Day 6

Sunday January 21st, 2018

Bon Swa,

Today we got going early with a 0730 boat ride over to Madame Bernard. We cleaned out the depot which is a location we will use to store some of the supplies that will be offloaded tomorrow. Once we finished cleaning, we sat by the dock and waited for the boat to come that would take us back to Vacation Village. When we got back to Vacation Village it was lunch time. We had white rice, beets, chicken and macaroni salad!

After lunch we walked back over to the Port Morgan where Captain Lennon stays. We had a meeting to go over what everyone’s roles would be tomorrow during offload. The meeting involved all key players including Captain Lennon, the Mayor, Ailish O’Reilly and her staff at Haven, a representative from the orphanage and a few others.

The plan tomorrow is everyone will meet at Vacation Village at 0700. Captain Lennon will call the ship at 0730. At that point Captain Lennon and Mikayla will head out on their boat to board the Kennedy. There are two Emergency Management cadets on board the ship that will help coordinate. Liv, Kyle, Jenelle and AJ will be taking pictures of the supplies being offloaded. After taking some pictures they will take moto bikes over to Madame Bernard and wait at the dock. Tomorrow is a Market Day in Madame Bernard which will make things slightly more challenging. Twice a week Madame Bernard has market day where people from Les Cayes take boats to the island to sell their goods. There will be a lot more people than usual at Madame Bernard which may make things slightly more difficult. We will find out tomorrow.

The first set of supplies being offloaded will be the medical equipment that was discussed in the last post. It will be brought to Vacation Village. Jenn and Sam will be there to receive these. After they get these supplies Sam and Jen will wait for a call from Ailish to bring lunch to Madame Bernard by boat. This should happen around 1200.

The order in which supplies will be offloaded is protein, then miscellaneous, then desks, then diapers. The estimated time to be done with all the offload is 1500.

When we finished nailing out this plan we walked over to Abaka Bay to see if we could watch the football game. There wasn’t any service there so we walked to Ellie’s place, and we were able to get enough wifi to get updates on the game. Dinner at vacation village was pork and cabbage salad, and my favorite fried plantains! Tomorrow will be one of our longest days here, but we are all excited to see our months of hard work pay off.

I look forward to updating you tomorrow!
