Day 11: Friday 22 January 2016

Today, John and I woke up at the volunteer house at the Madame Bernard orphanage. We made our way to grab a quick breakfast of coffee and bread, then started interacting with the kids. Around this time all the children had started their day at school and our morning mainly consisted of assisting the kids with disabilities and moving supplies for the orphanage. Throughout the morning we also got some time to test one of the last water sources we needed to test. We later found out, similar to other sources on the island, that this water was plagued by coliform and other bacteria which would make any of us sick if we decided to take a drink. Being one of the most expensive and readily used reservoir systems on the island this was very disconcerting to hear.

Around midday is when Rich and Kristen showed up to work at the orphanage. The Emergency Management kids visited Captain Lennon at Port Morgan and stayed there for some of the day. John and I had to leave early from the orphanage, around 1:30, to avoid being caught in a rain storm on the way back. About 30 seconds after arriving back we were hit with a solid 20 minutes of torrential downpour. The good thing about rain on this trip so far is that it never lasts too long. After getting back we finished some water testing and joined the rest of the group for dinner. Speaking for everyone, we were all pretty exhausted. We ended the night with drinks by the water and some new found perspective on things.
