Day 2: Wednesday 13 January 2016
This morning we began the day in Miami, FL. After a quick breakfast at the Embassy Suites, we boarded a shuttle to take us to the airport. Once we arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, we made our way through Haitian customs. We then boarded a van owned by Lance Durban, and headed to his electronics factory. We had a tour of the factory and saw the products many employees were creating. The products that they were making will be used in many electronics like cordless charging pads.
After the factory, we made our way to the Karibe Hotel, where we saw a movie titled Poverty, Inc. that described the effects of long term international aid on third world countries. While immediate aid following a disaster is very appreciated and needed, the continued aid that spans years after the disaster can be detrimental to maintaining self-sufficiency. The movie gave the group a new perspective on the roles of charities and NGOs (non-governmental organizations). Following the movie, we grabbed some pizza for dinner in Port-au-Prince. We spent the night with Lance Durban and his wife in their home in Port-au-Prince before the next leg of our adventure began.
