Hi! I'm Emily Behen, a sophomore Emergency Management student from Danvers, MA. Last year on sea term was when I decided I wanted to apply for this co-op. During the overview of the major given on sea term, it was presented as an opportunity for upper-class cadets. I wanted to challenge myself to get hands-on experience right off the bat, so that I might graduate with a global perspective. Eventually, I'd like to work in humanitarian efforts, possibly with Red Cross or non-profit organizations.

The difficult aspect of this co-op for me is figuring out HOW to help. When people hear about or see the living conditions in developing nations, they are quick to gather up unwanted household items and various articles of clothing. Although they have the right idea to help those less fortunate, they are not allowing the developing nations to be self-sufficient. Money and donations should be funneled into programs that will strengthen the economy through local participation. For instance, if all goes as planned, and we can bring down the donated bikes (the project I am working on), it will promote transportation and commerce in IAV. I anticipate it being frustrating for myself (and likely others in the group) to not see the instantaneous fruits of our efforts. Although this trip in January will not revolutionize life on IAV, a few consecutive years of co-op groups like ours might! I am very excited to be given this opportunity as a sophomore, and am looking forward the hard work we have ahead of us.
